Delivering ChemiStories for families

This workshop will enable professionals working with families, chemists and chemical scientists to build skills in family engagement, storytelling techniques and chemistry concepts and inspire them to hold their own ChemiStories event.

The workshop will provide you with

• a simple definition of chemistry with the families they work with.  
• the confidence to identify chemistry concepts in children’s stories and have the language to explain them to families.  
• the skills to bring chemistry concepts to life through sensory storytelling techniques.   
• an understanding of the practicalities and barriers of delivering to families with children aged between 4-7 and how to address them.  
• practical ways to boost audience engagement when delivering online or face to face.  
• ideas on how to share storytelling techniques with families so parents/ carers can embed chemistry concepts when reading stories with their own children. 
• the opportunity to network and share ideas with practitioners working with families and chemistry professionals.

Workshop Facilitators

This online workshop will be delivered by Elena Miller and Dr Harriet Stanway-Gordon. 
 
Elena Miller from Starbright Arts is a Creative Arts Facilitator with a specialism in storytelling for over 15 years. As part of her role as a Creative Associate at The National Centre for Children’s books, she was involved in an Erasmus+ Project which sought to tackle gender bias in school settings through the use of STEM based children’s literature.   

Dr Harriet Stanway-Gordon is a medicinal chemist at Newcastle University working on new methods in drug discovery. She has been involved in a variety of outreach events focusing on disseminating scientific knowledge to the general public. As the mother of an 8 year old, Harriet is also passionate about early years STEM learning and often spends her weekends performing experiments in her kitchen.
